Biographical Sketch
Dr. Howell is a clinical pharmacy specialist at Hamot Medical Center and works mainly in the area of internal medicine, with a special interest in nephrology and cardiology. She is involved with the clinical consult service, which includes kinetics, nutrition support, pain management, and adverse drug reaction monitoring.
She is also involved in the education of pharmacy practice residents and 3rd year pharmacy students during their adult medicine rotations. She periodically gives continuing education lectures for the pharmacy technicians as well as lectures for the emergency medicine residents at Hamot Medical Center.
Dr. Howell is the course coordinator for Pharmacotherapeutics II. She teaches the nephrology sequence, as well as various cardiology topics. Other courses she teaches in include Pharmacotherapeutics III, Clinical Kinetics, and Introduction to Pharmacy Practice, as well as various electives.
She is currently serving as the Chairman of the Curriculum Committee, Vice President of Faculty Council, and is a member of the Residency Advisory Committee.
Dr. Howell serves as advisor to the Student Government class of 2009 and the RxRunners Club for the School of Pharmacy at LECOM.
Research and Areas of Interest
Dr. Howell is currently doing medication use and outcomes research at Hamot Medical Center focusing primarily on the use of clopidogrel and the adverse effects and costs associated with its use. She is interested in conducting medication use evaluations to identify drugs that are being used inappropriately and implementing policies &/or procedures to improve the use of those drugs.
