Academia/Teaching Rotation

Rotation Description:

The Academia/Teaching experience is a required experience for the pharmacy practice resident. The goal is to introduce residents to the various roles of faculty members and to provide opportunities for residents to teach in a variety of settings. The rotation will provide the experience to help the resident evaluate their interest in a career in academia as well as foster professional development of prospective faculty candidates.

The resident will participate in lectures and classes for 1st and 2nd year pharmacy students and will precept 3rd year students on adult medicine rotations. They will also participate in committee and faculty meetings, student interview, and other service activities for the School of Pharmacy.

The resident's tasks for this experience include, but should not be limited to:

The resident must understand faculty roles and responsibilities:

  • Describe the organizational structure of the School of Pharmacy (SOP).
  • Understand the ACPE accreditation standards for the SOP and describe how the SOP assures that it meets the accreditation      standards and continues to improve.
  • Understand the role of faculty in supporting student organizations.
  • The resident must work with a student organization to plan at least one event or community service activity.
  • Understand the role of the faculty in advising students, monitoring their progress, and taking action when necessary.
  • The resident will plan and facilitate a meeting with the preceptor's advisees.
  • Understand the selection process for student enrollment.
  • The resident will participate in at least one student interview.
  • The resident must exercise skills essential to pharmacy school faculty: Precept students on rotation under the supervision of a qualified preceptor. Roles will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Select patients/experiences for students, assist students in development of a pharmacotherapy plan, assess the students'       ability to develop such a plan, give constructive feedback in an appropriate manner, participate in grading students.
  • Present at least one journal club and case presentation, as well as assist and grade students in these activities.
  • Develop objectives, plan, organize and present lectures and write test questions to assess the students' understanding of       the material.
  • Present at least one lecture to 1st or 2nd year students and develop the appropriate number of test questions.
  • Understand learning styles and use this understanding in teaching experiences.
  • Understand the importance of scholarly activity and professional development as a faculty member:

  • Present an in-service to a group of health care professionals and/or submit an article to a peer reviewed journal.
  • Participate with the preceptor in refereeing an article for a peer reviewed journal.
  • Rotation Topic Discussions / Readings:

  • ACPE Accreditation Standards/CAPE documents
  • Organizational and administrative structure of the SOP, as well as the admissions process and roles of the various standing       committees
  • Pharmacoeconomics
  • Statistical applications and biostatistics
  • Various pharmacotherapeutics topics, depending on interest and the particular students on rotation; most commonly discussed will be:

  • Acute and chronic renal failure
  • Arrhythmias (Afib, Vtac, Vfib, ACLS guidelines, etc.)
  • Acute coronary syndromes
  • Anticoagulation/antiplatelets
  • Hospital acquired infections/antibiotic review
  • Liver dysfunction (cirrhosis, ascites, SBP, esophageal varices, etc.)
