Pharmacy Staffing Rotation

Rotation Description:

The pharmacy staffing activity is a one month rotation and a longitudinal experience that spans the course of the pharmacy practice resident's experience. The resident is required to staff the central pharmacy 32 hours per 28-day period. The shifts are as follows: one Wednesday shift (1130 to 2000) per 28 days and one weekend (Friday 1600 to 2000, Saturday and Sunday 0800 to 1630, and Monday 0800 to 1200) per 28 days. The resident will gain experience in each area of the drug distribution system including medication order review, dispensing, IV additives, chemotherapy and TPN. The resident will gain broader understanding of the role of the inpatient pharmacist in the safe and efficient provision of medications.

The resident's tasks for this experience include, but should not be limited to:

  • Provide pharmaceutical care at to all eligible patients within the health system.
  • Utilize patient assessment skills in the medication management of acute and chronic disease states.
  • Effectively communicate, orally and in writing, with patients, peers and other health care professionals.
  • Assist physicians in the selection and utilization of appropriate drug therapy.
  • Provide drug information services to peers and other health care professionals.
  • Educate and counsel patients and general public of proper use of medications.
  • Participate in clinical services provided by pharmacy service to include pharmacokinetic monitoring, therapeutic interchange      program, IV to PO conversion.
  • Prepare IV admixtures, TPN and chemotherapy.
  • Monitor drug therapies for drug interactions, allergies and contraindications.
  • Inventory and procure drugs and biologicals.
  • Conduct in-service training for pharmacy staff and other healthcare professionals.
  • Develop and utilize patient education materials and programs.
  • Participate in departmental performance improvement.
  • Oversee pharmacy support staff operations.
  • Assist in training and development of pharmacy staff (technicians, interns, pharmacists).
