About the Pharmacy Residency Program

Purpose Statement

To prepare the next generation of pharmacy clinicians to provide evidence-based education to pharmacy students and other healthcare professionals by attaining a position in a PGY2 Specialty Residency Program, as a Faculty Member of a School of Pharmacy, or by attaining a position as a Pharmacy Practice Clinician.

Residency Overview

The Millcreek Community Hospital (MCH) and LECOM School of Pharmacy Pharmacy Practice Residency is a twelve-month program established to meet the goals of general practitioners according to American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists (ASHP) standards. The residency provides a substantial teaching component as well as the opportunity to work with health care professionals in an intra disciplinary, multiple practice environment. A large focus of the residency program is spent in academia and teaching because of the association with a School of Pharmacy, a College of Medicine, and with a Community / Teaching hospital.

The program requires a 4-week orientation period at the start as well as the completion of core and elective rotations, all rotations being 4 weeks in length for a total of 12 rotations. Also, there are four longitudinal rotations throughout the year (Clinical Services, Main Pharmacy Staffing, a Project rotation, and teaching). The residents schedules are customized based on their own interests.

About the Hospital

Millcreek Community Hospital is a 200-bed teaching hospital that offers comprehensive care in the tradition of osteopathic medicine - treating the whole person for physical and mental illnesses, while emphasizing preventative care. The Hospital offers emergency services, outpatient diagnostics, inpatient care, surgery, long-term care and primary care to patients. The hospital also offers more physician residency programs than any other hospital in northwestern Pennsylvania concentrating in education. The Pharmacy Residency is highly involved with the hospital and the physician residency programs with both the pharmacy and medical residents learning side by side. The residents are employees of Millcreek Community Hospital.

About the School of Pharmacy

The LECOM Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) Degree Program provides a solid background in patient-centered care and prepares its Pharm.D. graduates to become effective members of the health care team for all areas of practice. The Pharmacy Residents have opportunities to teach and precept students at the school, including teaching lectures in the pharmacotherapeutic sequences.
